I've been over at Gryphon a few times recently, and, given the economy, they (still) seem to be doing a thriving business. A quick peek in the back, and
there seemed to be a number of guitars ready for pickup from the service department. It confirms my theory that two things are recession-proof . . . guitars
and golf. Enthusiasts will spend on both, regardless of the economy!

You all owe it to yourself to go to Frank's website. frets.com. Even though it's mostly acoustics related his site is a beautifully illustrated
resource for guitar maintainance. It is mesmerizing.
I remember Frank when he first came to the Bay Area. He was trying to get people go carry his guitars. Decided to do it himself and now is one of the truly legendary repair shops. Can't mention music stores without adding Kevin Jarvis' Gelb Music. I started working there for the original owner, Sidney Gelb, around 1963-4. I was there when Kevin signed on as a teacher and now, of course he owns the joint. What a morph that was... |

I saw Frank yesterday while I was at Gryphon for a workshop. The repairs area was quite busy . . . a positive note in this economy. Understandable, given the
quality of their work and Frank's respect in this area and throughout the country.

It was pretty good. I only ended up taking Part I. Have you ever taken a workshop by Ed Johnson? He handed out 5 or 6 Beatles songs, and then we worked through
them one by one, along with the vocal accompaniment over the course of 2 hours. I'll probably take his Acoustic Blues class, which I had done a few years
back. He said that he's thinking of offering it in the Summer.

No, I've never taken a class or workshop from anyone! I'm 100% self taught, which is why I suck so bad ;)
