A little unconventional pickguard, but otherwise this could be very interesting.

I saw this last night, Gary. Thanks for looking out for me, though!
I'm have a bit of GAS for a 30's Gibson L-00 or similar. (Yes, I said Gibson)

BTW, are you looking for anything in particular, Gary?? Just wondering . . . I've been emailing with this person in Sacramento who is selling his '68
D-28S. I bet you've seen it on CL. Turns out, he has or has had many vintage guitars. He just took possession of a SCGC Tony Rice Brazilian dread, which
kind of makes the D-28S expendable. But then he keeps saying that he's had some herringbone dreads, and they couldn't touch his '68. Almost makes
me want to get it.

His words:
"I've had 4 or 5 Martin Pre-War D-28 Herringbone's that I sold 2 or 3 to David Grisman, The Mandolin player. Not one of the Herringbones hold a candle to my D-28S, For some reason, This is 1 out of 100 Martin's that have that magical sound." 1968 Martin D-28S on CL |

I've been watching that D 28S for a couple of weeks now. It's been around before and it does interest me, but I'm in no position to buy. I know a guy who has one and it is truly a nice instrument. Be fun just to kick the tires on this one and get to meet the guy I wonder if this might be "oldmartins" from the UMGF. He's in northern california, used to be a dealer, if I remember correctly,

It sounds like he sells regularly on eBay, as he mentioned how steep his eBay fees were.

Gary . . . I wouldn't pay a dime over $35K.
God, if I pulled my stringing faux paus on a guitar like that one . . . .

Or get a Brazilian RW-colored Sharpie, and mark over it. Office Depot carries them, don't they??
Oh, and you're welcome to borrow my Mojo-creatin' string winder for your D-18. That guitar needs some serious Mojo!!

Those should work pretty well. Keep on mind that they are lacquer based I believe and will temporarily soften the finish. You probably want to use it
sparingly and sort of dab it on and not try to wipe off any excess as the rag will stick to the softened lacquer. On my furniture pieces I use an oil base
paste type filler which I can mix to match colors and wipe away any excess. Here's the stuff I use: http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(el5aqo55io0tzxvn2svqetqf)/ProductDetails.aspx?SKU=1224740

Thanks for the tip, Gary HTTS.
Probably the best thing is not to futz with it. Knowing me, I'll probably make things worse. The good news is, this Martin certainly has the mojo going. The fret ends are a bit sharp, probably because the fretboard has shrunk a bit over the past 70+ years. There is not much of the ebony nut left above the string slots. The finish definitely looks its age and the tuners have rust. With all this, I haven't thought about any of my other guitars. The parlor that I always play hasn't been touched since the 0-17 came home. |
