Not to be a nitpicker or anything, but I believe Chet Atkins and Michael Hedges don't play much guitar in the universe we all occupy.........if you get my drift. What's a Tommy Emanuel ??????
Believe it or not, in my 59 year old parallel universe, I was only able to recognize one name from the first list that was posted.
Sincerely, Rod Serling signing off from the Twilight Zone

Re Twilight Zone Guitar | #10 | ||

The guitar part on the Twilight Zone them was played by Howard Roberts. He also did the Munsters and I Dream Of Jeannie among others. Later he founded GIT. He
was a great guy. I went to a one week workshop he did in Hollywood back in 1971. He was so good. He introduced a lot of us to Joe Pass, who came and jammed
with Howard for about an hour. Unforgettable.

Got to include Chet on my list. Though I recognize tastes differ, I think he is one of the greatest guitarists to ever live. I have some friends that I play
with on weekends. We always do a few tunes that Chet recorded - A Little Bit of Blues, Temptation, Mrs. Robinson, Spanish Harlem, I'll Follow The Sun, If I
Fell, Sandman and Hot Toddy. Those are the high points for me when we get together to play.
I was fortunate to see him perform once in San Francisco at a dinner show. It was at Civic Auditorium I believe, and it was set up like a country picnic with tables covered in red checkered table cloths. They were serving BBQ, cornbread, corn on the cob, cold slaw and apple pie. It seemed like an odd thing to do in San Francisco, but the show was great. I wish he had come around more often. |

Telemikester told me a great story about seeing Chet, but I should let him tell the tale.

Oh yeah.... Chet Atkins at the Circle Star Theater with Larry Carlton opening up. As I remember, Larry was called in at a late date by Chet to fill in and
didn't have a set list of any kind. Larry just walked out on stage and told the audience to shout out songs and he would do his best to play them. At
first, it looked like the Chet fans didn't know who he was, but then he ripped into a couple of Steely Dan songs and the place went crazy. People were
yelling out anything that sounded jazzy. Of course Chet was absurdly perfect, every note was amazing and he was a crackup between songs. The show was great!
Chet and Larry jammed together at the end of the night, which was really something to see. Note: I think they actually did an Austin City Limits together once.
The funny thing was the audience mix of beehive hair dews and shredder dudes (this was the 80's). There were a lot of guys up in the front rows with long hair and leather jackets taking careful note of every lick Chet had to throw out there! Whoa, what a night!..... I sure hope it was real....... |
