Grover open back tuners |

Anyone have any experience installing these? I bought a set from Stew Mac to replace the cheap-o tuners that came on the Martin DSR, but they're unlike
any I've come across. The bushing for the faceplate seems to have a nut that's purely decorative. I'm wondering why they'd make them like
this or if I'm missing parts somewhere!

Hey Guyute,
Could you post the StewMac P/N or email it to me? I'd be happy to take a look what's what... |

Was wondering the same thing. Does it have the same mounting screw spacings and bushing diameter?

Could it be the #4592 or #4593 series? If so, those have "press-fit bushings" and are designed for an 11/32" diameter peghole.

It's the #4592. The V97 with 18:1 ratio.
I guess I just wondered why they would have a nut on them if they weren't supposed to screw into/onto anything! Purely decorative, I assume? http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead_tuners/Grover_18:1_Sta-Tites.html |

Yep, looks to be... I usually press the bushings in using the closed chuck of my drill press. That's if your pegholes are the correct size. If they are too
small, and you don't mind altering them, you need to ream them with a peghole reamer.

I've heard you can sometimes do it with just a pencil wrapped in sandpaper. Seeing as I don't have a reamer, this seems like the best choice (if more
than likely tediously slow).
Gonna try to swap them out this weekend. |

Since I have to put a pickup in it in order to install a jack....it's worse than you think.
My guitar is going to get reamed in the endhole. :yikes: |

I think I might hire a professional for such a delicate operation

Yeah, the sandpaper around a pencil or some round object should work, but it reminded me of how I learned "how not to do it". -See the URL below...
http://www.higgydude.com/tuners/63-tele-tuners.asp Here's how to do it with a reamer and arbor/drill press. The reamer is about $20 from GPR. The pencil or a dowel and sandpaper will work, it will just take a little longer. Just be careful. http://s429.photobucket.c.../qq14/antimoo/?start=100 |

Well, supposedly, the bushings are a drop in replacement on newer Martins (but not on older ones). Since this is a 2007, I am crossing my fingers that they
are actually drop-in.

Having a Tapered Reamer is what you need to accomplish what you want to do w/o messing up the Tuner Holes, although sandpaper on a dowel/pencil will
work...but can be time-consuming. I bought a
Tapered Reamer & comes in handy when needed. I'm not sure what type tuners came on your Martin DSR, but if
you are going w/ 18:1 Sta-Tites (#4592), I think you prolly will need to remove some wood?
The handle on the cheaper reamers is a little wimpy at best. I made a Rwd handle for mine. It gives you a little more control when turning it. It doesn't take much. For $12, it gets the job done!
For Tuner installation: If you don't have access to a drill press, a C-clamp will work. Make sure you protect the back of the Hdstk w/ something...then slowly press the new bushing's in...'evenly', & make sure they are seated flush against the Hdstk. Sta-Tites work great! |

Wow, that handle is a nice piece of work! I must do that. The handle on my reamer is just a little rod that likes to slide out of the shaft now and then and
I'm always afraid it's going to land on someones guitar.

Telemikester wrote: Thx! The reamer is from Specialty Guitars. I think it was only $8? The steel rod handle had to go > I pounded it out w/ a hammer. I bought a little chunk of Honduran Rwd from Woodcraft & shaped on my benchtop disc/belt sander. Then, I bored the hole w/ a drill press and epoxied the handle on the end of the reamer...It sure beats buying one from LMI..lol! Of course by now, I had to finish it, so I shot it w/ Deft Lacquer...luv that stuff! |
