Hello from "The greater Bay Area" |

Saying I was "close enough" to be considered in the greater Bay Area, Tri-cone invited me to participate in this cool new effort at establishing a
place for folks to share their passion for the guitar. So, thanks Tri-cone, I am happy to be here and I certainly recognize lots of handles from AGF (I post as
El Conquistador on AGF) and even APM. Even though I live down in Visalia, I did go to college at St.Mary's College of Moraga where I first really started
to play acoustic guitar in order to interest girls. While the girls part didn't work out very well, I did fall in love with the acoustic guitar and have
been playing ever since.

This kind of gracious welcome certainly bodes well for a great forum. Thanks!

Here goes . . .
It wouldn't be a forum unless I ask the prerequisite question: "So what guitar(s) do you play?" |

I have 3 main guitars. 1 jumbo size guitar, 1 OM size, and 1 parlor size. The Jumbo is a Baranik JX Italian/cocbolo. The OM is a Yamamoto OMY Giant
Redwood/Hog. The parlor size, 0 size actually, is a Brondel B4 Italian/Honduran Rosewood.
My favorite cowboy chord is E maj. Steve |

I haven't heard of any of those builders, which means they must be great!
Do you have any pics?

Here is the 0 size Brondel: http://www.laurentbrondel.com/Site/Home.html Here is the Yamamoto OMY, a Bay Area Builder: http://www.yamamotoguitar.com/
And this is the Baranik JX: http://www.baranikguitars.com/index.htm These are 3 very different sounding guitars. Steve |

Whoah, Steve . . those are nice! I especially like that Brondel parlor. That's Honduran RW, eh?
BTW, your pics definitely qualify as guitar porn. I know it's a hassle, but care to post them (again) in the "Gratuitous Guitar Porn thread"? |

Will do. Yes that is Honduran, but a pretty crazy looking piece. HR does not usually look like that.

That redwood on the Yamamoto looks great, too! How does that sound?

The Yamamoto is a truly great guitar. Light as a feather and just squirms in your arms. It has a huge sweet sound with tons of lush overtones and sustain. Once
again, Tony Yamamoto is a local guy working out of Dublin with prices that are still a real steal, IMHO.

Nice....so this guy is in Dublin?
Just curious, what do you consider "a steal" for a handbuilt guitar?

Chris, these are truly fine guitars. Independent luthier pricing could be a whole other thread. But, I will tell you that, in my experience, any independent
luthier that charges less than $3k is a pure gamble with the odds against you. I have lost this bet a couple of times trying to get a high qualify guitar for
cheap.
Follow the posted link to Schoenberg Guitars inventory, go to the Independent builders section, then scroll down to Yamamoto. You will find 2 examples of his work that I consider a bargain price for this quality guitar. Just the fact the Schoenberg has chosen to stock his guitars is a testament to their quality. I have played many a hand built guitar that did not sound as good that were priced much higher, IMHO of course. Oh, and while you are in this section, check out the Brondel. Again, very reasonably priced for what you get. http://www.om28.com/stock...Anchor-INDEPENDENT-35882 Steve |
