Along with smaller bridge plates, non adjustable truss rods, fatter necks, better materials, and the list goes on and on. But it's an enjoyable list
.
Thanks for starting something for us local boys Tricone!!!!! Gary |

My pleasure, Gary! Be sure to say "hi" in the New Member Intro forum!
I wasn't sure if "hide glue" would get a response. Shame on me! We need more Martin-philes in here!

Back to the topic . . . I want a pre-63 Martin . . I'm leaning towards a clean 00-21/28 or 000-21/28. I'm a real newbie when it comes to vintage
Martins, but i'm finding it fun doing the research. I'm still not sure which years to shoot for. Still trying to absorb what I'm reading. I
*really* like that '44 00-28 in Eric Schoenberg's inventory . . what pretty Brazilian! . . but ... regarding the price . . OUCH! Know where I can find
one for less than a luxury car? ;)

Tri,
Don't know of any for sale off hand, but you do have some competition. http://theunofficialmartinguitarforum.yuku.com/topic/81077 Good luck. Gary |

I did see that thread at the UMGF earlier this evening. Wasn't he looking for a '65, cause it was his birth year? In any case, I'll be following
that thread with interest.

So Gary (and others) . . . let's talk Martins. Besides your D18, what others are in your stable?
I currently have a '38 00-18 and a '96 000-28 Golden Era. |

You have a 000-28 GE?
Can I borrow some money?

You know of my guitar? Not many know of it since it was a Limited Edition and was only made in '96. Slothead, 12-Fretter with a 1 13/16" nut.

All I know of it is that the x-28 GE's are some seriously pricey guitars. I think the d-28GE goes for upwards of 15k?

Brazilian or EIR | #12 | ||

Is your 000 28GE Brazilian or EIR. Brazilian is the determining factor from a price standpoint. ....nice guitar either way.
For Martins we have the old D 18, a 1994 OM 21, and a 2001 D 18GE. Wouldn't it be great to be able to be able to go to one place and be able to play and compare different Martins from different eras as far as tone is concerned? Tone is so subjective and so variable even within a very specific group, that comparing is very hard even with new guitars. Maybe you feel like you have to have that prewar sound, and then find that a mid fifties D 18 is exactly what you're really looking for all along. And with Martin there were always subtle changes going on.......mid 30's are different from late 30's from early 40's from late 40's...............you get the idea. And you'll never get too many of them in one place at one time. Guyute asked if our old D 18 was a good one. I don't know because in 20 years I've never seen another one I guess what I'm trying to say is that you need to find a tone that blows your skirt up and go for it, regardless of vintage. Gary |

divideman wrote:Good advice, Gary! I would be curious, though, how a D-18 Authentic stacks up to your prewar D-18. I almost purchased the Authentic, but held off. |

I've had the good fortune to play a lot of old Martins. The Authentic lines don't stand up to them....yet. In 40-70 years, I have no doubt that the
Authentics will sound just like their pre-war counterparts.
Best sounding guitar I've ever played was a 1936 OM-28 (I believe that was the first year they made it). Cosmetically, it had been through the ringer, but the tone was jaw-droppingly good. It could have been mine for the low low price of only $70,000! |

Here's a perfect example of what I was talking about. We had the chance to compare an Authentic to ours and they were pretty close tone wise (Hey
Guyute, maybe we do have a "dog")

Guyute wrote:Hey Chris . . I was wondering what Authentic(s) did you play? I'm guessing they were the D-18A and the 00-18A (or is it the 000-18A). Not sure if many people have gotten to play the 000-28A. |

I played the 000-28A at Buffalo Brothers a couple months ago. Let's just say I was very nervous....
I've played 3 or 4 examples of the D-18A in various shops. |

I may have been mistaken . . I know they had a D-28A . . did they also have a 000-28A??

No, you're right. My mistake. It was a 000-18 Authentic that I played @ BB (along with a D-28GE that was just ridiculous).
And apparently the D-28A is inactive now. |

You are correct. Those D-28A's sold out quickly. They had quite the hefty price tag.
