Yes, we're talking G-strings. ;)

I like'em big and wound! I mainly use D'Addario 13's on the resonators and their Bluegrass sets on the Martins. The Bluegrass sets have the .056 Low E, but a .012 on the High E, so you don't blast a finger tip if you skip a few days of playing... They all have wound "G" strings and sound great for slide and allow easy slide moves on the wound strings. |

Why would one want an unwound G string, though? Is it just personal preference?? Is it more conducive to bottleneck slide playing?

Hi Tricone,
Not that I'm aware of. I think it's just a personal preference. Most prefer the thicker tone of a wound G string and there are fewer intonation and tuning issues when you get into that gauge in a wound Vs unwound string. Although some may like the brighter tone of an unwound G string, this may also depend on the type of slide used (brass, glass, pocket knife...). The only slide players I have heard of using an unwound G string (on an acoustic) have stated they like it because they find it easier to bend than a wound G string when they fret and nothing about when they slide. Are you sliding on an acoustic or electric? Either way, I would suggest picking up some unwound singles in the gauge you prefer and giving it your own A/B test. Please post your results. I would be interested in your findings. |

Currently, I'm not sliding at all.
I've always been curious about why some string sets are sold with the unwound G string as an option. I know I read it once or twice before about why one or wouldn't want an unwound G, but couldn't recall the reasonings. |

I can't do the wound G. Just feels funny. Maybe on an acoustic guitar, but not on an electric.
